Portillo’s Brings Chicago Street Food to Lubbock, Texas With First Local Location

Portillo’s Brings Chicago Street Food to Lubbock, Texas With First Local Location

LUBBOCK, TEXAS – The Hub City is about to get a taste of Chicago. Later this year, Portillo’s, the beloved Windy City street-food chain, will open its first Lubbock restaurant in the Canyon West shopping center off Marsha Sharp Freeway. Known for its craveworthy hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, and famous chocolate cake, Portillo’s expansion signals a major new chapter in Lubbock’s dining scene.

What’s New at Portillo’s Lubbock

Founded in 1963 as a hot dog stand in Villa Park, Illinois, Portillo’s has grown into a powerhouse with more than 95 restaurants across 10 states. Now, it’s bringing its iconic flavors to West Texas for the very first time.

The Lubbock location will be 6,250 square feet with seating for 155 guests. Guests can expect double drive-thru lanes designed for speed, along with pick-up shelves for online and delivery orders — a sign that the brand is serious about convenience as well as tradition.

This location joins other planned Texas openings in Dallas, Fort Worth, and El Paso. For Lubbock, it’s the first time locals will have direct access to a restaurant that has become a national cult favorite.

Inside the Menu and Experience

Portillo’s is best known for a few Chicago staples that have earned it a devoted following:

  • Chicago-style hot dogs topped “the right way” with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, sport peppers, and a pickle spear.
  • Italian beef sandwiches, slow-roasted and thinly sliced, often served “dipped” in savory au jus.
  • Char-grilled burgers with Portillo’s signature seasoning.
  • And, of course, the legendary chocolate cake, a moist and rich dessert that has inspired countless social media raves.

From My Table: Having tried Portillo’s Italian beef in Chicago years ago, I can say there’s something unforgettable about that first bite. The bread soaking up au jus, the tender beef layered with giardiniera — it’s a messy, glorious experience. Knowing that Lubbock will soon have its own slice of that tradition makes me genuinely excited to line up when doors open.

Beyond the food, Portillo’s is known for its high-energy, retro-inspired dining rooms filled with neon lights, memorabilia, and bustling staff. That same atmosphere is expected in Lubbock, blending classic Chicago personality with West Texas hospitality.

Community Buzz and What’s Next

CEO Michael Osanloo summed up the excitement best: “We’re thrilled to continue bringing the Portillo’s experience of iconic, craveworthy food and friendly hospitality to more communities across Texas.”

Locals in Lubbock have already started buzzing online, with many commenting that Portillo’s will bring “something truly different” to the city’s dining mix. As Lubbock continues to grow, national expansions like this one underscore the area’s increasing appeal to major brands.

Looking ahead, Portillo’s could expand further across Texas. With its proven model of pairing comfort food classics with modern drive-thru efficiency, don’t be surprised if Lubbock becomes one of the chain’s most popular outposts in the state.

Whether you’re a fan of Chicago dogs, an Italian beef devotee, or just curious about one of America’s most talked-about food chains, Portillo’s arrival in Lubbock promises to be one of the biggest food events of the year.
