Bangkok at Greenville Closes After 32 Years of Thai Hospitality in Dallas

DALLAS — A neighborhood Thai favorite with a legacy of flavor, family, and floral artistry is closing its doors after more than three decades.

Bangkok at Greenville, a go-to spot for Dallas residents since 1993, will officially shut down on June 30, marking the end of a 32-year journey on Greenville Avenue. The closure isn’t just about the end of a restaurant — it’s a goodbye to a deeply personal chapter built by owners Joe and Sunny Pumphaung, who poured their heritage, love, and community spirit into every corner of the space.

32 Years of Authentic Thai Cuisine in the Heart of Dallas

From the moment you stepped into Bangkok at Greenville, the aroma of lemongrass and sizzling wok-fired noodles greeted you like an old friend. For many, it was the spot where they first fell in love with pad Thai — and despite promises to try something new, ended up ordering it again and again.

Joe Pumphaung, who took over the restaurant in the early ‘90s, wasn’t just any chef. Trained in culinary arts at the Royal Family’s prestigious cooking school in Thailand, Joe brought with him a deep understanding of not just flavor, but presentation and cultural beauty. His mastery of fruit and vegetable carving and floral arrangements elevated Bangkok at Greenville into something more than just a casual dining spot.

“I’ve eaten at dozens of Thai restaurants across the U.S., but this one had a personality — dishes that looked like art and tasted like home,” I remember thinking during my last visit.

More Than a Meal — A Cultural Experience

There was a quiet elegance in how the restaurant operated. Every table felt like an invitation into the Pumphaung family’s story — from the traditional Thai music softly playing in the background to the intricately carved garnishes that accompanied each plate.

Over the years, the couple expanded their efforts with two sister restaurants: Bangkok City (now closed) and Bangkok at Beltline, which will continue operations under new ownership.

But Greenville Avenue was always the heart of it all — where Joe and Sunny poured their energy, curated each menu with care, and built bonds with regulars who became extended family.

The decision to close wasn’t taken lightly. As operational costs in Dallas continue to rise, Joe and Sunny also felt the tug of family responsibilities back home, especially with aging parents.

“While this was not an easy decision, we know in our hearts that it’s time,” Sunny shared in an official statement. “We’re so proud of the memories and meals shared here. Bangkok has been our home, and we’re grateful to have shared it with so many.”

The restaurant’s final day of service will be June 30, giving patrons just enough time for one last plate of curry puffs or drunken noodles before the lights dim for good.

A Goodbye That Hits Hard for Dallas Diners

Bangkok at Greenville wasn’t flashy, and it didn’t chase trends. But that’s exactly what made it a Dallas treasure. It was reliable, heartfelt, and rooted in something real — tradition, service, and culinary love.

If you haven’t been yet, this is your chance to experience a slice of Dallas restaurant history before it becomes a memory.
