Torchy’s Tacos Shutters 2 Kansas City Locations After 5 Years of Bold Tex-Mex Flavor

KANSAS CITY, MO — The popular Texas-based chain Torchy’s Tacos has officially announced the closure of two of its Kansas City metro locations, ending a five-year run in the region. The restaurants on Ward Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri and West 135th Street in Overland Park, Kansas are both shutting their doors on Tuesday, August 26.

A Short History of Torchy’s in Kansas City

The Ward Parkway location, situated on State Line Road, held a special title — it was Torchy’s first-ever location in Missouri and the greater Kansas City area. Since its opening, it had developed a loyal following for the chain’s unapologetically bold Tex-Mex offerings and cheeky marketing.

Meanwhile, the Overland Park location also helped solidify the brand’s popularity in Kansas. With its quirky taco names, creative toppings, and signature sauces, Torchy’s carved out a unique space in the city’s crowded taco scene.

What Made These Locations Special

Torchy’s became a staple for many Kansas City residents, offering more than just tacos — it delivered a full experience. Diners flocked for menu favorites like the “Trailer Park” taco, green chile queso, and secret menu items whispered about by regulars.

The sign posted at the Ward Parkway location expressed heartfelt gratitude to its supporters:

“The Kansas City area welcomes us with open arms. We appreciate all the love you have shown us over the last 5 years. We’ll provide you with the best hospitality and serve the Damn Good food you love until our last day.”

The store’s farewell message was a reminder of just how tight-knit the relationship had become between the restaurant and the local community.

No Official Reason Given, But One Location Remains

Torchy’s has not released a public statement citing a specific reason for the closure of these two metro stores. However, one location will remain open: the Olathe restaurant at 11919 S Strang Line Road will continue serving the chain’s signature tacos.

This lone location is now the chain’s only remaining footprint in the Kansas City metro area.

Author’s POV: Familiar Flavor, Fading Footprint

As someone who’s always had a soft spot for offbeat taco joints, Torchy’s stood out not just for its food, but for its attitude. There was a certain irreverent charm to walking into a place that offered tacos called “Brushfire” and “Tipsy Chick.” Losing two locations at once feels like a hit to KC’s diverse dining culture.

Whether you went for the queso, the brunch tacos, or the boozy margaritas, Torchy’s made casual dining feel a little more daring. I’ll definitely be swinging by Olathe for one last bite of nostalgia — and a reminder that even big chains can leave a local-sized hole when they leave.
