Krua Thai & Sushi Breathes New Life Into Former Houston Thai Gourmet Space
HOUSTON, TX – The Richmond Avenue spot that once housed two of Houston’s most beloved Thai restaurants is getting a flavorful revival. Krua Thai & Sushi, a new dining destination combining authentic Thai cuisine with Japanese sushi, has officially opened in the space once home to Thai Gourmet and, more recently, Thai Garden.
What’s New at Krua Thai & Sushi
Located at 6324 Richmond Avenue, Krua Thai & Sushi began its soft opening on July 21 and is preparing for a grand opening celebration on August 28. The new concept is led by Chef Miranda Loetkhamfu, co-founder and former executive chef of Kin Dee in the Heights, alongside Chef Shawn “First” Auttapon Nernbok.
The menu is a deliberate fusion of regional Thai cooking and Japanese sushi and sashimi, offering diners the best of both worlds. Signature dishes like khao soi—a rich northern Thai curry noodle soup—share the spotlight with artful sushi boats, fresh sashimi platters, and creative rolls.

Inside, the 3,400-square-foot restaurant retains much of the charm from its Thai Gourmet days, with wooden walls and traditional accents largely left intact. New touches include a sushi bar, expanded bar seating, and updated furniture that brightens the space while preserving its cultural warmth.
Inside the Menu and Experience
Guests can expect a dining experience that feels both familiar and fresh. The Thai menu leans heavily into authentic regional flavors—from spicy stir-fries to aromatic curries—while the Japanese side offers classic nigiri, sashimi, and specialty rolls.
As someone who’s eaten at both Thai Gourmet and Kin Dee, I can say Krua Thai & Sushi feels like a thoughtful continuation of the neighborhood’s culinary story. There’s a comfort in seeing familiar décor and flavors, but the addition of sushi gives the space a whole new energy. It’s the kind of menu that works equally well for a casual lunch or a special night out.
In addition to the main dining room, the restaurant is updating a dedicated event space, scheduled to open later this year, making it an option for private parties, celebrations, and corporate gatherings.
The bar program, another new element, features expanded seating and a selection of wines, beers, and cocktails designed to complement both the Thai and Japanese offerings.

Community Buzz and What’s Next
The location’s history carries weight. Thai Gourmet was a Houston institution for nearly 30 years before closing in 2022. Thai Garden tried to fill the gap but shuttered in early 2025. Local diners have been vocal about missing a standout Thai spot in this area, and Loetkhamfu says she’s ready to deliver.
“We know the history here, and we know this neighborhood has been looking for a new Thai restaurant to step back into this space,” she said. “I think they’ll really like the menu and experience Krua will offer—a culmination of our shared passion for authentic flavors and innovative culinary approaches.”
This is Loetkhamfu’s second restaurant opening this year—she also launched MA Asian Kitchen, a fusion concept in Rice Village, last month.
For Krua Thai & Sushi, the grand opening on August 28 is just the start. With plans for ongoing menu updates, seasonal specials, and the addition of the event space, the restaurant aims to become a long-term fixture in the Richmond Avenue dining scene.
